Opportunity: Applications are invited for a fully funded 3.5-year AZ iCASE PhD studentship in synthetic organic electrochemistry under the supervision of Dr Louis C. Morrill in the School of Chemistry at the University of Cardiff. The studentship will commence on the 1st of October 2019 (stipend: £14,999 p.a.) and is open to applications from UK and EU nationals.

Supervisor: Dr Louis C. Morrill is a senior lecturer in synthetic organic chemistry at the Cardiff University and is seeking a highly motivated recent graduate to join his research group as he establishes a diverse research program in the area of synthetic organic electrochemistry.

Project: The project will involve utilizing both synthetic and mechanistic approaches to discover and investigate new electrochemical reactions. The electrochemical generation and utilization of various radicals will be central to this project. This is a burgeoning area of sustainable synthetic organic chemistry and represents a great opportunity for highly motivated graduate students.

Candidate: Eligible candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a minimum of an upper second-class first degree (2:1) or European equivalent and a Masters in Chemistry. The successful candidate will also have a strong background in organic chemistry. First-hand experience in a relevant area of chemistry such as synthetic chemistry, catalysis or heterocyclic synthesis is highly desirable. A highly motivated and dedicated student will gain a thorough training in synthetic organic chemistry and be rewarded with a highly stimulating project that will shape the future of this exciting new research program.
